Jojo is transgender. She was assigned male at birth and came out as trans in 2012. "Dysphoria" is a story about the physical and psychological pain that she overcame to survive to release this music. Many suicide attempts led to many inpatient hospitalizations as she struggled to access transition-related medical treatment, as she literally screamed in agony for years. The goal of this song was to try to illustrate what dysphoria feels like.
